Symbian And Windows Mobile Phones

Symbian and Windows Mobile phones get Google Street View, There's an application that's become a firm favourite of oh so many people, whether they're using it on their PCs or on their mobile phones: Google Maps, that awesome mapping program, that lets you get directions, find just about anything on the map, and even see aerial views of what you're looking at. On some mobile phones, though, it goes further, by giving you Street View, where you can actually get down to street level, and look around in full 360 degree vision, seeing the street as you'd see it at eye level. The iPhone, the T-Mobile G1, Blackberrys… they're the ones you needed to buy to get Google Street View.

Except they're not the only mobile phones it's available on now, according to Engadget Mobile, because now, Street View is available for Symbian (presumably Series 60) and Windows Mobile phones.


Since I've more or less decided I'm having an X1 Xperia (yes, I'm calling it that now, I've decided that name just rolls off the tongue so nicely, and will, hopefully, make me sound more exciting than I really am), that's rather good news, that! You may ask why they've now decided to roll it out onto other mobile phones besides those, but the answers a dead simple one. Those mobile phones up there in the first paragraph… they be massive big'ns in America. But with Street View rolling out in places like France, Spain, Italy and, yes, the UK, it makes a huge amount of sense to roll out Street View to the big smartphone systems over here.

And that means Symbian and Windows Mobile. So, rest assured, if you have the X1 Xperia (and I plan to join you in the not too distant future), you'll be able to zoom in and see where you are at street level. But… I'll tell you what'll be really cool. If you've ever seen Street View used on the T-Mobile G1, you'll know that because the G1's got a compass built in, you can pan round the view of the street you're looking at just by turning round with the phone. The Nokia N97, due out next year, also has a compass built in. So, if you go for that upcoming Symbian monster, it's entirely possible (although not confirmed yet), that you'll get the exact same feature!

Now, if only they'd care to release Google Earth for something other than the chuffin' iPhone, I'll be a happy bunny

Vertu Boucheron 150

Luxury mobile phones gone mad the UTTERLY vile Vertu Boucheron 150.
It's always fun to do a blog post about luxury mobile phones. You know, the Vertues and Mobiadoes of this world. Basically, it's fun to see how the other half lives, so we can point and laugh about how overpriced and not-that-nice their mobile phones are.

Well, according to UnwiredView, Vertu have outdone themselves with the new Boucheron 150. Oh, and at this point, I should probably warn anyone reading this that there's no way this blog post isn't going to be a rant. Seriously. There may be spit on my chin by the time I've finished…

Let's start with the looks: the Vertu Boucheron is reportedly hewn from a single piece of gold, giving it (theoretically speaking) high-class, exclusive looks evocative of the Boucheron jewellery house that it's made for. Really, the only reaction I can give to that is… well… I dread to think what Boucheron jewellery looks like if it's anything like this monstrosity. I mean just look at it. I wouldn't have thought there was anything in history that's just inconceivably ugly from every single angle, and I certainly never thought I'd see a mobile phone that fits that description. 'Who hand-carved this beast?', and 'How are they loose in society?' are the questions we should ask! If ever there was a mobile phone that looks like it's not just been hit by the ugly stick, but had its face methodically kicked in by the entire ugly forest, it's this. Seriously, what is so wrong with a mobile phone that's got straight edges, and why would people want a phone that looks like it involves a car crusher in the construction process?

You don't see the Nokia N97 needing this kind of stupid design work! Or many other mobile phones, come to think of it. Let's just say that in the case of this mobile phone, the phrase 'sculpted from solid gold' could be interpreted, based on the looks, as 'got a hippo to repeatedly stamp on a lump of gold'.

And the features? Well, what would be the point… it hasn't got any. Except that Concierge button shared by all Vertu mobile phones, which to me, is proof positive that when you make billions from selling oil (come on, you know that's who keeps buying Vertu mobile phones), you lose the ability to find information and plan things for yourself.

So, shall we go for an entirely subjective and opinionated conclusion of this little piece? Ah, why not!

If you want a super-powered, awesome Nokia mobile phone, get the Nokia N87. If you want a decent, genuinely pretty, luxury phone, get the Nokia 8800 Arte.

If you live on Mars, or pay 9 billion quid for a pair of socks, or keep tigers as pets, then you are obviously loaded, and therefore, I am open to receiving Christmas presents of, say, Argos vouchers to the value of £17 million.

Hey, come on, it has to be worth a try; anybody who's seriously considering buying the Vertu Boucheron clearly has more money than sense, so I may be an appealing purchase for them, too!

Google Android From Sony Ericsson

Google Android mobile phone on its way from Sony Ericsson.
Despite earlier rumours that they weren't going to be doing so, Sony Ericsson have confirmed they are planning on making a Google Android mobile phone, and have confirmed they have signed up to the Open Handset Alliance, Engadget Mobile reports.

Of course, it's not just them, as people like Asus, Toshiba and Vodafone have also been announced as joining, but in terms of new rockin' mobile phones for the consumer, Sony Ericsson are the big name signed on who can potentially deliver the coolest mobile phone quickest.

That's needed badly, because, despite the T-Mobile G1 being new, hugely innovative, and, I have to admit, pretty cool, the first of any breed never changes the world it's born into. Even if you look at the T-Mobile G1 objectively, that mobile phone alone can't change the landscape around it, much the same way the iPhone didn't start to make real sense as a purchase until the second version was released. It's more of a demonstrator of what may be possible. Well the Sony Ericsson Android handset be the mobile phone to take that example, and make the phone actually into the world-changing, universe-breaker that the T-Mobile G1 simply can't be?

Well, time will tell, of course, but consider how the Sony Ericsson X1 is doing, and consider the rave reviews it's getting. Also consider that the Sony Ericsson X1 is the first ever Windows Mobile phone I've ever wanted to own, since it makes Windows Mobile, well, nice.

So, if they can take an operating system they've never used before, and create the best Windows Mobile phone ever made, with the Sony Ericsson X1, imagine what they can do with Google Android.

Oh, and ten billion quid says the first one will be an Xperia mobile phone

Sony Ericsson Xmini - the cutest Walkman phone to not be released in the UK
Some days can be downright depressing. You wake up, check your news feeds, see a mobile phone on the Boy Genius Report that's destined to make you go, "Awwwwwwwww, sweet," and then find out it's only going to be sold in Japan. Alright, granted, I know it's not even a very high-powered handset, and I know that a sizeable proportion of the UK's mobile phones will relieve themselves all over it, but, still… I've kinda fallen in love with it a bit.

Called the Sony Ericsson Xmini, it's properly tiny, coming in at just 75mm tall, and weighing just 75g. That's one of the smallest mobile phones I've ever seen.


And I know I shouldn't love it. But I can't help it. I do.

I mean look at it. It's adorable. It's like the mobile phone equivalent of a kitten. I'd feel as bad slagging this mobile phone off as I would if I'd just kicked a puppy. There's no way you can look at it, at not go "awwwwwwwwwwwwwww", and if you do, then you have no soul. Ok, I agree, loads (pronounced just about all) of our UK-spec mobile phones top it, and the Xmini can't even compare to something like the Sony Ericsson C905, but that's not the point.

The point is I will never get to play with one.

It's being made for the Japanese network KDDI, y'see, which means it doesn't use the same system of cell towers as most of the rest of the world. So, if it comes over to the UK, it'll basically be a brightly-coloured (and if it was the green and purple one up there, a Constructicon-coloured one… yes, that was a Transformers reference…) doorstop.

Ah, what the hell, our mobile phones are more powerful. Power beats cuteness, in the same way that I'd rather have a Bugatti Veyron than a pet hedgehog…

Mystery mobile phone pops up online

Mystery mobile phone pops up online, makes people go 'Er, what?'
A mystery mobile phone's popped up over the weekend in various places, and it seems to be causing a storm of 'Eh, what?' round the whole of t'internet (well, that bit of it that gives a monkey's about mobile phones), according to Engadget Mobile. And nobody knows what it is.

From the piccie, though, we can tell a few things about this mystery mobile phone…


First, it's got a full QWERTY keyboard, and what looks like the optical mouse pad on a laptop below that, complete with left and right mouse buttons. That says smartphone. Well, actually, that says mini-laptop, so chances are it's reasonably powerful. Second, it has a front-mounted camera, so it's most likely at least 3G, and probably, these days, HSDPA. So, it should be able to compete with the big boys in the mobile phones world, when it comes to internet access. Combine that with the qwerty keyboard, and it should rock.

Finally, its screen is vast. Proper vast, as in comparable to the iPhone or HTC Touch HD type vast. And judging by the number of fingerprints on the screen, I'm guessing it's a touchscreen mobile phone. So, it could be powerful, it could be a top-end smartphone, and it could have a touchscreen.

There's a downside, however:

It's ghastly. I mean, really, just look at it. I don't care what mobile phone it is, as it stands at the minute, in Essex-Boy XR3i white, I really don't like the look of it. Maybe the final version of whatever mobile phone it is will look better but for now, it has all the charm and grace of a Citroen Saxo with a home-made body-kit glued to it.

Other Google Android Phones

After the T-Mobile G1 - Other Google Android Phones are on the horizon.
Well, now the T-Mobile G1 has been launched, and now we've seen the queues forming to grab Google Android, it's time to take a look at what other mobile phones are going to appear with that robotically-named operating system packed into 'em.

Motorola

Given yesterday's post about Motorola's plans for survival, it should come as no surprise that one of the next Google Android mobile phones is going to be a Motorola. What may sound unusual is exactly what phone we can expect, as Motorola have said it will be a 'social networking smartphone'".

I'm at a bit of a loss to work out precisely what that means, and I don't think I'm the only one, although it certainly sound intriguing. We're used to seeing smartphones, and we're used to seeing mobile phones with things like direct access to Facebook on them. Hell, we're used to seeing smartphones with things like that, too. So, what I'm at a bit of a loss to figure out is exactly what more they've added on to make this a dedicated 'social networking smartphone'.

Although rumoured specs from the Boy Genius Report include a 3.5 inch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, theoretically putting it in high-end smartphone territory, if I'm honest, the words 'Sidekick Slide' are treacherously sliding towards my lips, here…

Samsung/LG

So, Motorola are all set to get into the Android game, but who else' s mobile phones can we expect to see? Well, persistent rumours keep popping up now and again that the two Korean giants, Samsung and LG, are going to be making mobile phones built on Android. However, those rumours are unproven, so until we get firm confirmation from either of the manufacturers, I reckon it's safe to assume those mobile phones are 'fictional until proven otherwise'.

Of the big names, it seems only Motorola and HTC are definitely confirmed to be making future Google Android phones.

Hop-on/OpenMoko

No, I'd never heard of them till recently, either. Hop-on's most well-known product (aside from their cloned mobile phones, one of which looks virtually identical to the Nokia 5310) seems to be that $10 disposable mobile phone over there, to the right, look:-

However, Hop-on now say they plan to storm into the top-end mobile phone market, with their first Google Android phone, due at some point next year. No word on what it'll be like, or even whether it will happen at all, but Hop-on say it will come in at under $200 (roughly £123) when it's released, making it the cheapest Google Android phone.

Meanwhile another name that's hugely unknown in the UK, OpenMoko is alleged to be heading towards building Google Android phones, which does ring true, since their current mobile phones run on Linux, and Android is made essentially from, you guessed it, Linux.

Asus

The last name on the list might be surprising to some, but not to anyone who's seen any of Asus's previous mobile phones. Although it's unlikely you will have done, since they sold them in Asia, not the UK. The name, over here, is far more familiar from their range of netbook-style EeePCs… or, as I tend to call it the EeeeeeeeeeeeeeebygumPC. Well, it's rumoured their range of mobile phones is going to expand, to include Android. It's also rumoured that they'll share a branding with the EeePC.

What, the EeePhone's on its way, then? Eee1, maybe?

Ooh, no, ePhone, that'd work!

So there we have the state of what we know so far. Other than HTC (responsible for the T-Mobile G1) and Motorola, it seems the list of people officially developing Google Android phones is limited to not very famous names, who've realised that you can use Android for free. So, where are the Nokias, where are the Sony Ericssons?

Well, I've said it many times before, and I just need to end this post with two words to answer that question:

Symbian and Foundation…

The Next Generation GPS sat-nav Pants

News has come through to us today from The Age; apparently, lingerie-luminary Lucia Lorio has gotten right up the nose of feminists round the world with her new creation:

Some feminist groups are up in arms, calling it the 21st Century equivalent of a chastity belt, but Lorio is at pains to point out that it's purely designed for harmless titillation and fun, kinda like a modern version of hide and seek. Or catch me if you can. So, it's being billed, in Lorio's own words, as 'a wink to women and a challenge to men.' Added peace of mind for whatever comely wench wears it can be had from the fact that she chooses when and where she turns the GPS unit on, and therefore, when her paramour can track her.

Once you get over the initial bizarreness of the idea… well, it still seems bizarre, but apparently, some women in the company's home territory of Brazil are buying it as a form of protection, which isn't that surprising, when you consider that Brazil's got the third highest rate of kidnapping in Latin America, just after Colombia and Mexico.

The question remains of how the woman's other half is going to chase after her, since she could theoretically be miles away, and unless he's got mobile broadband to get to her location relatively quickly, traipsing 3 miles is going to dampen one's wanton ardour quicker than an ice cube down your pants.

Of course, if it's just a website you have to log in to, to find her, then you could do that on something as simple as the Sony Ericsson X1, instead of a laptop, and since it's also got Live Messenger built in, you can be in constant contact with her, exchanging scintillating messages, or more likely, telling her that next time, she can wear normal undies and get her backside round to your place, instead of sending you wandering round São Paulo for 3 hours. And of course, if she's really wound you up, the danger is you'll keep telling her you're just round the corner, when all the time you're at home, with your feet up sniggering, as you direct her to the shops…

And I'd like to point out that it took quite a lot of thinking to work out how to shoehorn mobile phones into this story…

Motorola AURA Moto Mobile Phones

Motorola AURA - the new hope for Moto mobile phones?
News has come through of Motorola's first attempt to reinvigorate their brand, as they try to stop themselves from going completely and utterly bankrupt, defunct and devoid of life, and according to Engadget Mobile, the way they hope to do it is not by releasing a top-end, feature-packed mobile phone, but a phone that costs roughly £1250 and isn't very powerful…

However, I will concede something: the Motorola AURA does actually look quite stunning.

Clearly Motorola aren't going for the high-end market with the AURA, but for those people who buy premium mobile phones, who care more about premium materials and design. In other words, the Nokia 8800 Arte crowd. Now, it's quite easy to mock, but… well, I can actually see some sense in that, you know.

Think about it, Motorola have, rightly or wrongly, developed a reputation for making the RAZR. And then for not doing much else except the RAZR. They've never really been known for making high-end mobile phones, so they're probably on safer ground to go after the more niche mobile phones. So, you get things like a premium metal body, a bearing in the swivelly bit made in Switzerland, and a 62-carat crystal display.

Oh, while we're on the subject of the screen, this is where the AURA shows off its only real bit of innovation, since it's one of the first (if not the first) mobile phones in history to have a round screen. Which is pretty cool, although it's not quite the same as 8 megapixel cameras, or new Google operating systems, really, is it?

Basically, Motorola seem to be billing in a similar to the way Rolex promote their watches, with style and engineering over features, and the price tag of about £1250-ish reflects that.

Even if it is just a flashy Motorola V70…

Where We Use Mobile Phones

53% of Americans use their mobile phones on the lavvy, According to a report on Engadget Mobile, a survey conducted by Nokia, about how working Americans use their mobile phones, has thrown up some interesting titbits of information.

Apparently, 53% of working Americans have taken calls or done emails while on the toilet.

As unsavoury as that is, it gets worse. Some 23% admitted to answering their mobile phones whilst on a date, and a further 24% owned up to having answered calls or taken an email, during the bit after the date, where they'd gone back to one of their houses and were 'having a coffee'. Oh, come on, surely I don't have to spell that one out…

The fact that 59% of those surveyed said that they never switch their mobile phones off, ever, ever, ever, could go some way to explaining why those statistics have come about, but… I can't help but thinking that if I was out with a beautiful lady, or in with a beautiful lady after going out with her (aww yeah, you know what I'm saying, huh, huh, huh?), the last thing I'd care about would be getting an email saying Ned in accounts had finished his TPS report…

The survey does highlight people's attitudes to work, and stresses that people need to find balance between their working lives, and their personal lives, to be healthy, happy and de-stressed. Presumably that means being your own person outside of work and not sitting staring at your mobile phone, going, "Ooh, it's going to go off in a minute, I know it will." Mind you, that's an attitude I find really rather alien. I've got two mobile phones, work and personal, and when I leave the office, my work mobile phone goes off. That's my advice: have two mobile phones, and only give your work one of the numbers. Easy way to keep your personal life separate, that!

So, what are we to learn from the Nokia survey? First, 24% of the people surveyed obviously value mobile phones more than rumpo, and should know better. Second, 23% haven't realised that if you're nattering away to someone else on your mobile phone, while you're on a date, the other party will rightfully get bored and annoyed, and would be justified in jabbing you in the eye with a breadstick.

And finally, if you ring one of the 53% and hear them straining and going, 'Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh,' it's probably best not to ask why…

The Blackberry Storm Screen

Official - the Blackberry Storm screen is pretty much scratch-proof!
In the bad old days, before the touchscreen mobile phone really came into its own, everyone who used one was really rather protective over its screen. Well, you would be, since you do everything using the screen. Scratching… breaking… touchscreen users used to worry about the screen on their mobile phone getting damaged.

Users of the Blackberry Storm, however, don't need to worry about that, since a new scratch test video proves the screen's is virtually unscratchable!

In the video, he goes at it with a set of keys (which you probably will carry in your pocket), a flick knife and a huge spike they put receipts on in restaurants (which begs the question of what he carries in his pockets). And of all those things, not one could put a scratch on the screen of the Blackberry Storm! You may be wondering how it can possibly withstand being set upon with a flick knife, but the answer's actually very simple.

More and more mobile phones are coming out that have a glass screen, instead of the traditional plastic affair… and the Blackberry Storm's one of 'em. That's how the Blackberry Storm being seriously key-ed: the screen is made of super-tough glass. And it genuinely is impressive, seeing it shrugging all that punishment off. Entry level Sony Ericsson Cyber Shot

There's no doubt that the Sony Ericsson c905 is sitting right at the top of their Cyber-Shot portfolio right now. It's one of the most impressive camera phones ever made, and its popularity, looking at its recent sales figures, is indisputable. However, according to the SEMC Blog, it's due to be joined by some little siblings early next year, for those people who want Cyber-Shot performance without going right to the very top-end of the list.

Expect to see three new Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot mobile phones early next year. First up, and the only one that has a proper name so far, is the Sony Ericsson C510,t he baby of the bunch, and one that'll be, I reckon, quite obviously sold as an entry-level Cyber-Shot phone.

Especially since it's, basically, the Sony Ericsson K770i, but newer. So, expect it to have a 3 megapixel camera, and be the cheap way to get yourself a Cyber-Shot mobile phone. In other words, identical to the thinking behind the K770i. And that was a cracking little phone, so I have pretty high hopes for the C510. Basically, if you want a decent camera phone on the cheap, I'm predicting this baby'll be the phone for you.

Completing the trio of new mobile phones are two handsets (one candybar-flavoured, one slidephone-flavoured) that share a 5 megapixel camera, putting them neatly into what is surely going to become the mid-range for Cyber-Shot phones. It's fair to say that the modern mid-range is considerably higher end than the mid-range mobile phones of yesteryear, which consisted mainly of a pixie inside the phone with a hole to look out of and a box of Crayolas…

First up is the Filippa, a 5 megapixel phone that looks as though it's going to become next year's Sony Ericsson C902, with 5 megapixels but with a proper Xenon flash added on.

Or, in other words, the K850i…

Finally, there's the Frances, the slidey version with a bigger screen, which just has 'baby C905′ written all over it. So, for anyone who thinks the Sony Ericsson C905 looks, to modify a phrase from earlier in the week, like the canine's conkers (and many people, including me, do), but wants a bit of a cheaper alternative to that 8 megapixel monster, the Frances is the phone for you.

Meanwhile, if you do want the full 8 megapixel beans, you need to get yourself the Sony Ericsson C905 now!

Google Android T-Mobile G1

The T-Mobile G1 captured all the headlines by being the world's first Android-powered mobile phone, but the plan was always to have Android be a completely open source operating system, available for use in, well, any mobile phones that people felt like sticking it in. And so, a freelance company has done just that, and made the world's second Android phone, according to Engadget Mobile.

Hailing from Australia, it's the Kogan Agora. And if that's not an incitement to go, "Eh? Who?" I don't know what is…

Time for a bit of info on them, then. Kogan are a web-based brand, who basically have their mobile phones, and DVD players, and whatever else they sell, built to their exacting specs in China. And that's how the Kogan Agora's come about. But what can we expect from the world's second Google phone?

Well, first of all, this here mobile phone comes in two flavours: the Agora and the Agora Pro. On both phones you get a 2.5 inch touchscreen, 3G, a backlit QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and a microSD slot. The Agora Pro, though, being the big brother of the two mobile phones, also chucks in a 2 megapixel camera and WiFi. As for looks, well… where the T-Mobile G1 can tend to come across like a bizarre mating between an iPhone and a Sidekick, the Agora mobile phones come across like Blackberry-a-like handsets. You know the ones, mobile phones like the Nokia E61 or Samsung i780. Not that that's a bad thing, because the Agora does actually look rather pretty, and for business-y type users, they may well prefer the more conservative design.

However… if you want one, you'll be buying it from Australia, since that's where the phones are made, and where Kogan's based. It'll start getting expensive to ship one over, I suspect, especially since you can get the T-Mobile G1 free on contract, if you really want an Android phone.

So, overall, looks pretty decent, and although I wouldn't get one, it's nice to see a whole range of mobile phones being released by people we've never heard of before.

I can't see Nokia losing too much sleep over them, though…

Future Phones To Run On SOUND

Mobile phones that NEVER need charging - future phones to run on SOUND, It's been a while since we had any properly mental concepts on this blog, and no, the 01Phone doesn't count, because it's just a mobile phone, albeit a hyper-advanced concept. I mean the proper, hardcore sci-fi stuff like harnesses to control your phone with your mind, or a mobile phone that fits in a contact lens, or a whole bendy nanotech mobile phone.

Well, we go back to the world of nanotechnology today, thanks to a story on Tech Radar. And it's a good'n, this, as it's about mobile phones that don't need to be plugged in and charged up. EVER. Oh, and not only does it not need charging, but this portable, handheld, electric device doesn't need a replaceable battery either…

Hmm, no matter how awesome the Nokia N97 is, it can't do that!

Right about now, you're probably asking yourself how an electrical device can work without a battery to actually give it electricity. Well, like I said earlier, nanotechnology, and materials called 'piezoelectrics', which can be best described as 'not as scarily complicated as they sound'. Imagine you have a Malteser (go with me on this), but when you stamp on it, instead of it falling to bits, it stays together, but produces electricity. Materials that do that, usually ceramics or crystals, are piezoelectric materials, and they've been known about for decades. So, why has the idea of mobile phones without batteries only popped up now?

Because scientists have found out that piezoelectrics, when they hit a very, very, very small size (no, much smaller that that), they double the amount of electricity they produce, that's why. We're talking reeeeeeeeeeeally small here, about 4000 times thinner than a human hair, well into the realms of nanomachines, and Star Trek, and Stargate SG1, and gawd knows how many sci-fi shows that I've seen over the years. And probably a few comics. And at least one novel.

Anyway, at such a small size, those nano-particle-machine-battery-things are also much more sensitive to being prodded and stressed than bigger piezoelectrics, which means they can be made to generate power with less pressure. And that means, that in the future, IF they can make it work, and IF it doesn't as much as a manned mission to Mars, we will see mobile phones that get power from sound. You talk, your phone gets power, simple as that.

So, far from draining your battery (if you're an incessant natterer) as they do today, mobile phones of the future will get more powerful as you talk more. It'll be awesome, but the condition is that the boffins working on this have to make sure the piezoelectric, sound-powered nanomachines don't take over the world, and enslave us all, which is the recognised and official destiny of all sci-fi machines. And then, their lives could be powered by the sound of them crushing their frail human victims.

Never mind Asimov's 3 Laws, what we need for these beasties is earplugs…
