Ford Focus RS Unveiled

Production ready Ford Focus RS unveiled
We saw the new Ford Focus RS concept live at the Paris Motor Show and yesterday Ford has unveiled the production ready version, which was already available for orders in the UK, with the first deliveries expected in March. Priced under £25,000, the new RS will be powered by an upgraded version of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine from the Focus ST, which will develop 296 hp and take the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and up to an electronically limited speed of 155 mph (over 160 without the limiter).

The RS will be fitted with an Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential, developed by British engineering specialist Quaife and with Ford's new RevoKnuckle suspension. Other performance upgrades include a new stability control, lowered ride height and bigger brakes, while a very aggressive bodykit (available in Performance Blue, Frozen White and the awesome Ultimate Green paint finish) completes the package.

Rolls Royce Phantom In Matte Black

Rolls Royce Phantom The matte black paint finish always gives a car a misterious appearance and what more could you wish for when your car's called 'Phantom'. We have no idea who this special Rolls belongs to or where it's located (yeah, we know, Middle East was our first choice too, but judging by the photos, it doesn't look this way) (Update: As Dan pointed out, it looks like it's in Venice, California). Anyways, this car really looks like a ghost: matte black finish, blacked out wheels, even the Spirit of Ecstasy got blacked out too. The black theme is applied to interior too, only this time it's a glossy piano finish, that somehow contrasts the 'ghostly' exterior. You have to admit, the Rolls is pretty cool, in a very morbid way.

Car Audi R8 V10

Car Audi R8 V10It looks like the Volkswagen Group really wants to take all the high performance coupe market, because yesterday the Audi R8 V10 was officially revealed. Powered by the 5.2 liter V10 engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, which delivers 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, the R8 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 316 km/h (196 mph). Audi claims that, equipped with the R tronic sequential gearbox, the car achieves an average fuel consumption of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg), which is not bad at all, considering its performance figures. However, as standard, the car comes equipped with a six speed manual transmission and, of course, quattro all-wheel drive system.

As you'd expect, the R8 V10 will come with a set of extra features comparing to the 'regular' R8: 19 inch exclusive 10-spoke Y design alloy wheels, all-LED headlights as standard, plus a few styling elements (more accentuated sideblades, wider side sills and matt aluminium look for the exhaust grilles). Also, the standard equipment list is very impressive: Fine Nappa leather heatable seat covers, a driver information system, navigation system and Bang & Olufsen sound system, deluxe automatic air conditioning, alarm system, instruments and gearshift knob decorated with red rings, while the footrests and the rocker switches of the R tronic have an aluminum finish. To see all the R8 V10's features, check out the official press release.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro is scheduled to go on sale in Germany in the second quarter of 2009 at a starting price of 142,400 Euros.

2010 Mercedes Benz E Class

2010 Mercedes Benz E Class
2010 Mercedes Benz E Class, Though the new 2010 Mercedes Benz E Class was scheduled to be unveiled in January, the German carmaker forgot that the internet is one of the most powerful mediums and thanks to the guys from Autoscoops.eu we've got the first official photos of the car, one month before the official unveiling (which might happen sooner now). The first thing we notice is the heavy influence from the F700 design study, unveiled at last year's Frankfurt show and from the Concept FASCINATION, unveiled a couple of months ago, in Paris. Unlike its direct competitors, the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A8, which have sporty and power written all over, the E Class has always been about style and class, and you must admit, the new one has plenty of those. The only flaw we spot is the rear part, with those tail lights that remind us of the Citroen C5.

Mercedes Benz E Class 2010There was no official press release so far, but we expect the new E to be larger, longer and wider than the current generation, which means more space and comfort for the passengers. Under the bonnet, the new luxury sedan will probably be powered by new versions of Mercedes' current engine line-up, like the 200, 220, 250 and 300 CDI diesels, the 350 BlueTec, of course, and a range of petrol engine, including a top-of-the-line AMG powerplant developing around 600 hp. As you'd expect from a Mercedes, especially in this class, the car will be stuffed with all sorts of technologies, including Night Vision, blind spot and lane departure warning, plus a new set of safety features, like the new impact absorbing bonnet that pops up 5cm and protects to cyclists or pedestrians at low speed collisions, plus a new system that reacts when potential collisions occur.

As we said earlier, Mercedes planned on announcing the car in January, with the world debut scheduled for March, at the Geneva Motor Show. Along with the new generation, new versions of the E Class will debut: an E-based coupe (Geneva) and a cabriolet (next year's Frankfurt show).

BMW 3 Series based Russian Cardi Body II roadster

BMW 3 SeriesBMW 3 Series based Russian Cardi Body II roadster, After making its debut 5 years ago, at the 2003 Moscow Motor Show, the Body II roadster created by Russian company Cardi has finally reached a production-ready status. We agree with the guys from Carscoop, who say the car looks pretty similar to the Ford Thunderbird but, though usually we're horrified by Russian cars, this doesn't look that bad. One problem though, it's pretty hard to tell where's the front and where's the rear. As we said, the Cardi Body II is based on the previous generation BMW 3 Series platform and is powered by a 196 hp 2.5 liter petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car also has BMW's instrument panel, front seats and switchgear. The Russian company says the roadster will be able to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6,6 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

2010 BMW Z4 brochure leaked

2010 BMW Z4Last week we showed you a photo of the new BMW Z4 caught in a BMW showroom somewhere and now, thanks to our good friends from BMW Blog, we've got another goodie for all the car's fans. This official brochure was leaked and we can get a look at the car's rear (though it's a scan, the quality is pretty good). Hmm, that makes us reconsider a little our previous position, because the car looks very good here. Some influence from the 6 Series, but that's very promising, we must admit.

Japanese Honda Accord

Japanese Honda AccordLast week, the new Honda Accord made its official debut in Japan and only a few days later, Honda specialist Mugen already presented the first details regarding the upcoming package for the car, both sedan and wagon versions. The Accord Mugen will a full new bodykit, with new front and rear spoilers, 'aero' bumpers, side sills and a huge rear wing, plus four alloy wheel designs available in 18 and 19 inches size. Performance upgrades include a new sport suspension kit, high-performance brake pads and rotors, plus a new sport exhaust system. No word wether the 2.4 liter engine or the 5-speed automatic transmission received any upgrades.

Land Rover Mobile Phones

Land Rover Mobile PhonesFollowing on from the news that the Sonim XP3 is all set to pick up where the JCB Tough Phone left off, another announcement's popped up today, stating that Sonim are going to pair up with something else that's got four wheels and a massive engine. According to Engadget Mobile, next year we're going to see mobile phones from the motoring marque associated with mud, off-roading, and driving up inaccessible mountains.

Yep, 2009 will see the first ever Land Rover-branded, Sonim-made mobile phones. Has there ever been a more perfect match-up than that..?

Three models are due to be released in 2009, the Land Rover S1 and the S2 G4, followed at some point later in the year by a third, as-yet-unnamed mobile phone. There aren't any piccies yet, but we can take some not entirely stupid guesses as to what they'll be like.

Big.
Probably Green.
Rugged.
That is all.

However, since Land Rover's are also a bit high-tech in places, could this be where we finally see a Sonim mobile phone with a camera on? It'd be interesting, especially if it's a camera that'll work underwater. Whole niche market there, boys, get it made! However, we can pretty much forget the phone having a winch on the front, no matter how much I want one. Oh, and be warned, if you have a Land Rover mobile phone, it's reasonably possible some deranged ecomentalist won't be able to tell the difference between it and a 4by4, and call you a planet killer, despite the fact that when you factor in environmental impact of production, the Land Rover's probably a greener car than the Toyota Prius, and unlike that godawful G-Wiz thing which is made of bacofoil, it won't throw battery acid all over your face, and the road, and every innocent bystander round the car, if and when you crash it…

But anyway, I digress… so, while Porsche are still hooked up with Sagem for their mobile phones, the cars known for being able to nut their way through Burma are joining up with the mobile phones known for being able to, yes, nut their way through Burma…

Want the toughest phone ever to walk to earth? Sign up for alerts, and we'll email you when the Sonim XP3 is released!

The new Audi A5/S5

The new Audi A5/S5 unveiled, I'm sure you all know that the Audi A5/S5 is one of our favorite cars out there and we're more than thrilled any time something new shows up about the beautiful German coupe. And this time the news are really exciting, because Audi has unveiled the highly anticipated convertible version of the A5 which is extremely beautiful. Like we're used to, Audi has fitted the new A5/S5 Cabriolet with a classic fabric top which opens in 15 seconds and closes in 17 seconds, with fully automatic open/close drive coming as standard, plus an acoustic top available as an option, which reduces wind noise. Beside the obvious weight advantage, the soft top also allows increased trunk space, the A5/S5 having 320 liters (11.3 cu ft) of unused storage volume.

The new Audi A5 S5

Under the hood, the Audi A5 Cabriolet will be available with a range of five engines, two turbodiesels (190 and 240 hp) and a three gasoline engines (180, 211 and 265 hp). The top of the range engine, the 265 hp 3.2 liter TFSI V6 delivers 330 Nm (243.4 lb-ft) of torque and, goes from 0 to 100 mph (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds, up to a top speed of 246 km/h (153m mph) and averages 8.6 liters/100 km (27 US mpg). Of course, there will also be an S5 Cabriolet, powered by a supercharged 3.0 liter TFSI V6 which delivers 245 kW (333 hp), 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm, does 0 to 62 (100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), averaging 9.6 l/100 km (24.5 US mpg). For more details about the car, check out the official press release.

The first units are expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2009, with pricing starting in Germany at 37,300 Euros for the 160 hp 1.8 TFSI with six-speed manual transmission. Check out more cool photos after the jump.

5 facts you might not know about GM

With the recent financial crisis, GM is currently facing one of the toughest moments in its history, with the American giant very close to a collapse. But here are 5 interesting things you might not know about General Motors and how it changed the automotive industry, a list put together by the folks over at AskMen:

you might not know about GM

1. GM was one of the first companies to extend credit and create a monthly payment system for its customers, by establishing a financing arm in GMAC in 1919. The measure was a huge hit for the company, with all rivals being forced to follow their example in order to keep up with it.

2. GM introduced the two-stroke diesel engine, which will revolutionize railway transport and kill the steam locomotive. The first engine was used in 1930, when Burlingtion Railroad decided to drop steam powered locomotives and replace them with the faster and more efficient diesel ones.

3. GM had an important contribution to open heart surgery. GM Research Laboratories, along with American Heart Association and Detroit surgeon Forest Dodrill, developed the first mechanical heart pump, the Dodrill-GMR Mechanical Heart. The machine, very similar to a small 12-cylinder engine, allowed doctors to perform surgery on the heart, the first successful open heart surgery taking place in 1952.

4. In 1966, GM introduced the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Though the Electrovan project had a lot of problems, including high costs, no infrastructure to support hydrogen and it weighted 7,100 pounds (the project was killed fast), the technology used by GM then was the starting point for modern fuel cell cars, like the Honda FCX Clarity or the Pininfarina Sintesi.

5. GM had a very important contribution to the Apollo XI mission, which, in 1969, took Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and 'Buzz' Aldrin to the moon. Few people (including us) knew that, in the early '60s, GM's AC Spark Plug division worked with NASA and developed the guidance and navigation systems for the Apollo program, systems which were also used by Boeing for their 747 airplanes.

European Jaguar XJ updated

European Jaguar XJ updated

More features for the same money, Jaguar has announced that the 2009 Jaguar XJ will be revised, the British company looking for ways to increase their sales through these tough times. There are no new features available for the Jag, instead what they did was try and attract new customers by offering more equipment for the same amount of money. The update is available for the 2.7 liter diesel versions and it includes satellite navigation, front and rear parking aids, Bi-xenon headlamps, bright mes lower grille and side vents, plus Jaguar tread plates, which will all come as standard for the Executive version, priced at £44,599 in the UK. The Sovereign version will also be updated, with 20 inch Takoba wheels, 16/16 soft grain leather seats with embossed front headrests, leather for the instrument panel and grab handles and Jaguar tread plates. The XJ Sovereign will be priced at £50,472.

The New BMW Z4

If BMW managed to keep some mistery around its latest car, the new BMW Z4, all that is gone now, because the first photo of the car without any camo broke loose on the web. The car was photographed in a showroom (no idea where) before its official unveiling, on December 15th. We're going to wait for the official photos and info about the car, but we don't really like it. We had the chance to test drive the current generation, we really loved it, but this one, though the photo's quality is not that great, doesn't look that good. But let's wait for more stuff on the car.

The New BMW Z4

Our spies have lifted the lid on the next-generation BMW Z4 – and the big news is that it's getting a folding metal roof for the first time!

Look closely at these prototypes, and you'll see that instead of a fabric affair, the new Z4 is following in the footsteps of its 3-Series Convertible big brother, plus its Mercedes SLK rival, with a retractable steel top.

As our artist's impression shows, the car will also get a more muscular look. And the convertible has another trick up its sleeve. BMW isn't content with raining on the SLK's parade, as it will seek to outgun the Porsche Boxster with a new range of powerful engines for the car. These are likely to include the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder unit.

Jeep Jamboree with our 4S Wrangler

Jeep 4S WranglerWho says you've got to go fast to have fun in an automobile? Last Friday, I drove 11.4 intense miles over the course of nine hours, and by the end of the day, I was completely exhausted.

My loyal steed was Automobile Magazine's Four Seasons Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which performed extremely well on the rocky, muddy, river-y, and tree-tight trails of Virginia's Oak Ridge Estate in the first Jeep Jamboree of 2008. That's not to say that our Jeep breezed easily through the two-day event: The Wrangler required assistance from winches on three separate occasions—once to help it up a steep, slippery hill of red clay; twice to tug its back end away from trees. Two other times, another Jeep pulled us out of trouble by our front tow hooks. And once, a trail guide helped push us, by hand, up a greasy incline.

Nonetheless, our rescue green Jeep came away with some minor scuffs and scrapes, par for the off-roading course. Upgraded tires, perhaps from the Rubicon trim level, would have improved off-road grip, but the stock Goodyear Wrangler SR-As on our Sahara model performed OK considering their highway-biased tread pattern. But no rubber could erase the fact that our big, heavy four-door Wrangler is definitely more difficult to maneuver than its smaller predecessors. (At least our tires, extra space, and longer wheelbase—along with the factory navigation system and satellite radio—made the 600-mile-plus sprint from suburban Detroit a lot more comfortable.)
Jeep Shows Compass Overland 2
Don't dismiss the new Wrangler (codenamed JK) as an off-road failure, though, because it's certainly not: the rain and the mud made for exponentially more challenging trails overall. In fact, due to the rain-slickened routes, trail guides had to winch more Jeeps—including heavily modified examples—than they'd had to in any of the Oak Ridge Jamboree's previous eight years. (It's a good thing that the trail guides drove some sweet modified Jeeps of their own, including a 1981 CJ7 Renegade, a '51 flat-fender Willys, and a late '70s Jeep Scrambler.)

For the record, the Oak Ridge event utilizes parts of forty-seven miles of trails threading through a 5000-acre hunk of private property in Lovingston, Virginia. Oak Ridge was the first of thirty-one Jeep Jamborees (www.jeepjamboreeusa.com) scheduled for 2008, most of which also include tasty, home-cooked meals like those we enjoyed in Virginia. (Nothin' like biscuits 'n' gravy and grits to kick off a day of "wheelin'"!).
Jeep Shows Compass Overland
If you're still making payments on your Jeep—be it a Wrangler or any other Trail Rated model—you may not want to bang your vehicle against rocks or drive it through rivers. But if you can accept the risks to your Jeep's well-being, then get your butt out there on the trails! It's the only place to truly appreciate a Jeep.

Jeep Shows Compass Overland and Patriot Back Country at Paris Motor Show

We never thought France was extraordinarily fond of the Jeep, but Chrysler has seen fit to bring two Jeep concepts - the Patriot Back Country and the Compass Overland - to the 2008 Paris motor show.

Granted, as both consist mostly of trim and equipment modifications, they're more akin to SEMA vehicles, not the typical one-off concept cars usually found at international auto shows. That said, Jeep hopes both crossovers will call attention to their interiors, which are freshly revamped for 2009.
Patriot Back Country
Of the pair, the Patriot Back Country appears most modified. Jeep says it's supposed to "exude a fresh, youthful appeal," primarily by way of its vibrant green hue. A similar color is found inside, notably on the seat inserts, which also have a tire-tread pattern. If two-toned leather isn't "active" enough for you, the Back Country also has mudflaps and a custom roof rack sourced from the Mopar catalog.

Though Jeep says the Compass Overland is merely a prototype, we're fairly certain it'll see production. Like the Overland-badged Grand Cherokee currently available in the States, the Compass Overland is little more than a nicely-trimmed Compass. Apart from the green paint, Jeep has thrown in embroidered leather seats, and chrome accents on the grille, door sills, and side rub rails.

2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara V-6 (2WD)

2008 Suzuki Grand VitaraA shocking value for $22k! Keyless go, sunroof, climate control, auto lights, ESP, V-6, and a 5-speed auto? Wow.

No AWD though, which is strange; I don't really see the appeal of a cute-ute without all-wheel drive. Anyway, it's a competent driver with ESP that's a little strange (sometimes intervening in a straight line when there's no chance of wheelspin, and very abrupt intervention in corners). The V-6 has some weird resonances to it, but this little SUV is fabulously well equipped, looks adorable, and drives great. The only visible cheapness is that the (otherwise very nice) steering wheel controls don't illuminate. What a pleasant surprise, and what a lovely little car!

2008 Suzuki XL7

2008 Suzuki XL7XL7 is sized for the XL family, The Suzuki XL7 is one of those vehicles that gets lost in the overcrowded mid-size SUV market.

This is probably because it doesn't really shine in any particular way although it's a solid choice especially for the budget-minded. The engine is powerful enough but it can get a touch wheezy when really pushed. Although the transmission shifts a bit slowly, it's smooth, whether you're taking your time getting up to speed or you've got the pedal to the floor. It's interior is a weak spot which is surprising considering the interior of Suzuki's own SX-4—which is thousands of dollars cheaper—is one of the nicest in it's price range. All things considered, the XL7 is a really good value, especially if you need seating for more than five people on a regular basis. It's handsome too, so you can haul your XL family in style.
